The otter is a medium-sized carnivore species that lives on the banks of flowing or standing waters. It prefers the wooden and steep banks

In the Natura 2000 site Gilort River, traces of otter presence were recorded along the Gilort River, predominantly on sandy beaches in areas less accessible to humans, usually near larger areas with deep water where it can search for food.
Being a species sensitive to pollution, the presence of the otter is an indicator of clean water.

It feeds largely on fish, including Eudontomyzon mariae,a key species for the Fish for Life project.
